Breeding soundness examination of the boar
نویسنده
چکیده
rtificial insemination (AI) has become an increasingly common practice in the swine industry, and the value of boars for both AI and natural mating has also increased. It is therefore important to promote routine breeding soundness examinations (BSEs) on boars, which can help to identify poor or questionable breeders before they affect herd fertility and/or destroy an AI stud’s reputation. It will also protect the buyer if a prepurchase BSE is performed or is part of the purchase agreement. Reputable sellers generally welcome a BSE because it establishes credability and reduces the number of boars that have to be replaced for lack of breeding performance/infertility.

Evaluating the Breeding Soundness of Beef Bulls
Evaluating breeding soundness of bulls is an often neglected management practice. Producers may incorrectly believe that bulls that have previously proven fertile are of sound breeding value for the rest of their lives. They may also assume that new bulls are reproductively sound simply because of some vague or implied guarantee by the seller. Unfortunately, neither assumption is correct. Bulls...
متن کاملBreeding soundness evaluation of bulls by semen analysis, testicular fine needle aspiration cytology and trans-scrotal ultrasonography
The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of trans-scrotal ultrasonography and testicular fine needle aspiration cytology in assessing bulls for breeding suitability. These two techniques were also compared with semen analysis. Bulls presented for breeding soundness evaluation were assessed using all three techniques. The findings of each technique were compared. There was agreement ...
متن کاملGenetic parameters for scrotal circumference, breeding soundness examination and sperm defects in young Nellore bulls.
A total of 51,161 records of scrotal circumference measurements at 18 mo of age (SC18) and 17,648 records of sperm defects and breeding soundness of Nellore bulls (mean age of 22.5 mo), raised under extensive conditions, were analyzed to estimate coefficients of heritability and genetic correlations of morphological semen traits by Bayesian inference. The observed semen traits were classified a...
متن کاملBreeding Soundness Evaluation for Beef and Dairy Bulls - FSA-3046
The breeding soundness evaluation (BSE) is a practical method to identify bulls with less than satis factory breeding potential. This evalu ation should be conducted on every bull at least 30 to 60 days before each breeding season to allow enough time for replacement of deferred or unsatis factory bulls. The first step in a BSE is to select a veterinarian in your area who is competent in con...
متن کاملGenetic parameters for androstenone, skatole, indole, and human nose scores as measures of boar taint and their relationship with finishing traits.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate measures of boar (Sus scrofa) taint as potential selection criteria to reduce boar taint so that castration of piglets will become unnecessary. Therefore, genetic parameters of boar taint measures and their genetic correlations with finishing traits were estimated. In particular, the usefulness of a human panel assessing boar taint (human nose score) wa...
